1095 Tax Forms for health care in USA
Updated: 03/23/2026

If you purchased travel medical or visitor insurance through us and are searching for a visitor insurance 1095 form, it does not apply to your policy. Most of our plans are short-term international policies and are exempt from ACA requirements.

We provide private travel medical and visitor insurance. Only plans purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange) require issuance of Form 1095-A for federal tax reporting purposes.

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a government-operated platform where eligible individuals enroll in ACA-compliant major medical coverage. We do not enroll individuals in Marketplace coverage; therefore, we do not issue Form 1095-A, Form 1095-B, or Form 1095-C for travel or visitor insurance plans.

Types of Form 1095 and Their Purpose

  • Form 1095-A – Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. Issued only for plans purchased through the Marketplace, it reports enrollment and any Premium Tax Credits received. It is used for IRS Form 8962 reconciliation.
  • Form 1095-B – Health Coverage. Issued by insurers or government programs that provide Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC), it reports qualifying ACA-compliant major medical coverage during the year.
  • Form 1095-C – Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage. Issued by certain large employers, it reports offers of ACA-compliant group health insurance to employees and enrollment information, when applicable.

Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC)

Minimum Essential Coverage refers to qualifying ACA-compliant major medical insurance, including Marketplace coverage, employer-sponsored group health plans, and certain government programs. Generally, travel medical insurance is not classified as MEC under federal law.

Important Notice About Form 1095-A

  • We do not issue Form 1095-A for travel medical or visitor insurance purchased through our website.
  • Form 1095-A is issued only for coverage enrolled through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange).
  • Policies purchased through us are not Marketplace enrollment and do not generate Form 1095-A.

When ACA-Compliant Coverage May Be Appropriate

Individuals who need Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) or wish to qualify for Premium Tax Credits must enroll in an ACA-compliant major medical plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Premium Tax Credits are available only for eligible health plans purchased through the Marketplace.

Travel medical, visitor insurance, and short-term health plans we sell are private temporary policies and are not Marketplace coverage; they are not ACA-compliant and do not generate Form 1095. Even U.S. citizens who purchase domestic short-term medical insurance do not receive 1095 tax forms.

Do visitors to the USA need ACA-compliant insurance?

Visitors in the United States on B1, B2, J1, or H1B visas are generally not required to maintain ACA-compliant major medical coverage. Visitor insurance provides temporary medical protection during a limited stay, but is not structured as Marketplace coverage.

Buying visitor insurance does not affect ACA eligibility or tax obligations.

How does travel insurance affect federal tax reporting?

Travel medical insurance plans are generally classified as excepted benefits, as they do not meet the definition of Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) under federal law. Since they are not purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, they do not generate Form 1095 and are not part of Marketplace reporting.

Questions about travel insurance ACA compliance often arise because travel insurance provides medical benefits. However, policies that provide temporary coverage do not satisfy ACA Marketplace requirements.

Do we issue Form 1095?

Insubuy tax forms do not include Form 1095-A, Form 1095-B, or Form 1095-C for travel medical, visitor insurance, or other short-term health plans. Our policies are private temporary coverage and are not enrolled through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

What documentation should accountants or tax preparers expect?

Accountants should not expect Marketplace tax reporting documents for travel medical, visitor insurance, or other short-term health plans purchased through us. Federal Form 1095 is not issued for these plans, as they are not Marketplace enrollment and are not qualifying major medical coverage subject to ACA reporting.

Does travel or visitor insurance require Form 1095 at tax time?

Travel medical insurance purchased through our website does not require Form 1095 at tax time; no federal Form 1095 is generated for these policies.

Form 1095-A is issued only for coverage obtained through the Health Insurance Marketplace, while Forms 1095-B and 1095-C apply to qualifying major medical or employer-sponsored plans that meet ACA reporting requirements.

Federal Law Updates

  • 2014: The Affordable Care Act (ACA), signed under former President Barack Obama, required most individuals to maintain ACA-compliant coverage or pay a federal tax penalty.
  • 2019: Under President Donald Trump, federal law reduced the individual mandate penalty to $0.
  • 2025: Insurers and certain employers issuing Form 1095-B or Form 1095-C for eligible domestic major medical coverage are no longer required to mail those forms automatically. Forms must still be provided upon request. Travel medical and visitor insurance are not subject to Form 1095 reporting.
